My aquintance in Nagoya loves movies. I lent him my Galaxy Quest DVD, and he loved it too! Of the movies I watched over the last few years, Galaxy Quest is very high in ranking. Great story, parody of Star Streck but had good solid story line of its own, great actors, actresses, great CG. Action, laughs, feeling of satisfaction about plot and flow of the story.
Shaolin Soccer, Shrek, The Fifth Element, Scorpion King, Emperor's New Groove. These are my favorates. In my DVD library, my other favorites would be Moonstruck, 6 Days, 7 Nights, Blues Brothers 1 and 2. I watched these DVDs more than half a dozen times each. Of old movies, my must have DVD would be the Black Stallion. I read the book when I was 10, and it was a story I could not forget. When I saw the movie directed by Francis Ford Coppola (I was 20 years old) I was captured for life. I have the video tape, but since I will probably watch that movie for many, many more years to come, it's time I get the DVD.
I don't know if any of my kids will ever share my tastes of books I read, but it's great that I am sharing my tastes of movies with them.
I just read Chika Watanabe's blog, and it turns out she was listing her favorite DVDs on her December 22nd entry. Very interesting! I guess people generally watch a lot of movies during long holidays! She lists the Fifth Element as one of her favorates too. Looking back at my list, I would dearly love to have Disney's Aladdin too. And when are those Star Wars first three releases going to be available in DVD? One thing though, appearantly in US the Return of the King is already on! Should I fly to LA or something for a quick movie trip?

I watched Black Stallion when I was seven years old. Only two scenes remain in my memory. The young boy feeding sugar cubes to the horse, and the boy on the deserted island eating sea weeds which are supposed to tie up his spear(I fell asleep after then). That is one of the movies I intentionally didn't give a second watch 'cause I have been afraid of expecting too much, since it should have been one of the most beautifully filmed pictures according to my biased memory..
And I am also a huge fan of Galaxy Quest, like you and Chika san. The best scene is when Tim Allen asks the geek kid to search through the inner structure of the ship, telling him everything is real.. The kid yells "I knew it!"

I missed Chika-san's comment on the Galaxy Quest! How could I have missed it??
After reading your comment, I was thinking hard about what my favorite scene would be. I generally enjoyed all scenes involving Tony Shalhoub. Was it Tech Seargent Chen? Nothing, except when he had to neuronize Tim Allen seemed to phase him, and he even conquered that fear with a challange of showing off to his love, Jane Doe. (I like that character too!)
You were SEVEN years old when you first saw the Black Stallion? ... mentally, emotionally, or something, I seemed to have not grown in some aspect (I wish it was the looks!), because I continue to have the best conversations with people around 27 years old. I suspect you are in similar situation as me.
